Gene George began practicing admiralty and maritime law in 1974. His fields of special interest include maritime personal injury and marine insurance. He has represented clients in federal and state courts throughout the Great Lakes region. Gene has received the highest possible peer review rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
As a Proctor in Admiralty in The Maritime Law Association of the United States, Gene has long been active in the organization, holding various committee offices and memberships. At present, he is Editor of the Marine Insurance Newsletter, serves on the Committee on Marine Insurance and General Average, and is Chair of the Great Lakes Subcommittee of MLA’s Committee on Inland Waters. He is also Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of Great Lakes Protective Association, a marine hull insurer. Mr. George was named the 2012 Cleveland Admiralty and Maritime Law Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers.TM

Significant Cases
- Jury verdict for shipowner defendant in seaman’s lawsuit for personal injuries, affirmed on appeal
- Summary judgments/dismissals with prejudice of three suits by seamen accusing shipowner defendant of disability/handicap discrimination under Michigan and federal law
- Successful defense of commercial vessel pilot in Coast Guard administrative proceeding claiming his negligence caused collision of two freighters
- Represented shipowners in numerous personal injury/death, collision and cargo damage actions
- Represented various cruise lines, obtaining dismissals based on lack of personal jurisdiction
- Counsel for shipowner defendants in MARDOC maritime asbestos litigation in the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Ohio and Eastern District of Pennsylvania
