Legal Successes

MARDOC is a mass tort docket of maritime seamen's cases that is pending in Philadelphia and numbers in the thousands.  The firm is handling hundreds of cases on behalf of various Great Lakes shipowners.
 

 Douglas Denny and Sandra Kelly handled a multi-million-dollar estate where the decedent's affairs had been neglected for many years.

 

Julia Brouhard and Robert Coniam were involved in refinancing a Great Lakes cargo ship, representing the time charterer.

 

Robert Coniam and Sandra Kelly represented a shipowner in a Jones Act claim in a two-week Minnesota state court jury trial. A verdict for the seaman was reversed on the basis of a prejudicial jury instruction, and the case was remanded for a new trial in 2011.  It was subsequently settled and the retrial was avoided.

 

Julia Brouhard and Robert Coniam were successful in having a Jones Act seaman’s lawsuit filed against a Great Lakes shipowner in federal court in Miami dismissed for lack of personal jurisdiction over the shipowner.  See the full story in the Defense Research Institute's weekly newsletter, The Voice.

 

Julia Brouhard and Robert Coniam obtained a summary judgment in favor of a cargo receiver in federal court in New Orleans in a lawsuit filed by a longshoreman who claimed injury on a ship carrying the receiver’s cargo.

 

Gene George obtained a summary judgment in favor of a cruise line in an Ohio court on the basis of lack of personal jurisdiction over the cruise line.
